What is a topper?

Post by sarcasticLynx » Thu Mar 01, 2018 10:17 am

I see many people talking about tank toppers... is just a tank on another tank to make it taller? If so what kind of tanks are used? I have a 40 breeder I'm setting up and that foot of substrate is leaving me with six inches to work with for climbing lol.

Hey Lynx!

Toppers are just another tank on the top of another tank, making it taller. Exactly what you said, that's correct :)
There's only one tank that I know of that fits on a 40 breeder, which is an 18 inch ExoTerra terrarium.

Most people don't top 40 breeders. I have a 55 gallon, and I could only use a 10, or a 20 gallon for a topper.\ :D

Do you think a 40 breeder could top a 90? They are both 18" wide. I would love to do that. And how is the top tank attached?

Yes, as long as the tanks are the same width it's as easy as putting one tank on top of the other. The weight alone will keep the crabs from escaping, a 40 gallon weighs around 50 pounds if memory serves. If there is worry of the tank potentially being knocked off by a child or pet then it should be secured with a wooden frame for safety!

That's what I figured but it would be less than 50lbs since the glass bottom would be coming out.

I never favorited the idea of the bottom glass coming out, because you can just tip the tank over that way, and put a hood on top of it, just with a glass top.
But, that only makes it just a bit harder to reach inside of the tank, you'd have to go the inside way.

Huh. I think I can picture that. It would be difficult to reach up into it.
