Crabitote

Post by piratetoothgir » Tue May 08, 2018 1:29 pm

Hi :) I am starting up my very own tote!
I want to rescue hermit crabs from my store, and track down some Ecuadorians.
I am going to Home Depot in a few days, so I can get sand, and possibly look for a container, otherwise I want a 30 - 40 gallon clear tote that is higher.

I only want really high totes because I need the depth for the crabs, at least 10 - 12 inches.
Since I cannot physically put any E's in my 55, I thought I would make a separate tote! I'll already viewed the Tote Tutorial, and found Yuka's YouTube channel with her totes.

I'm just gonna mention this in case you hadn't considered it - I don't want you to infer that I'm judging.

If you regularly "rescue" crabs from a single store, you are in fact making it lucrative for that store to order in more crabs - to sell to you.

Expanding into more totes and tanks to collect more crabs from a store will directly result in the humans at that store believing there is more demand for hermits. I know they are precious little lives to us, but try not to forget that they are also a money-making product. It does nothing positive for animal welfare in general to increase demand for animals as products - even if a few individual animals get to enjoy life in your care.

Just something to bear in mind, is all. :)

Thanks for posting!
I understand this, and I want to reply conservatively :)

No, that’s not what I intend to do. I plan to track down a few Ecuadorians, and then be on the lookout at different stores for cute hermits that look as if they need to be purchased. I won’t just be going to my PetCo and buy all the crabs they have, because I realize that just makes them order more and more.

This is a special project for special hermits that need attention.

Where would you recommend I buy a large tote from? I wanted something that was 132 quarts, which is 30 gallons, that’s perfect for my intentions.

I'd try Home Depot, if you have one near you. I think you can usually check online to see whether a specific location carries the size you want - though sometimes the website site can be incorrect.

Target had some totes, the largest one was 45 gallons but it wasn’t clear. I picked this one instead. It just happens to be the exact one that Yuka used!

The decorations are all rejects that I didn’t end up needing in my 55, I also bought more cork because I can’t help it :)

I’ll buy an Ultratherm, then get this baby rolling! I don’t plan on crabs for at least half a month from now.

I have no actual evidence or research into this, but I have read chemicals from plastic totes will leech into the substrate? But maybe I am extremely paranoid.
