New 40 gallon

Post by hermiwormi » Sat May 19, 2018 10:42 am

I have moved my two crabs to their 40 gallon tank and they're loving it! There is a wall on the back that sticks out to resemble a rocky wall and they love climbing it! I have covered the screen lid with plastic, for obvious humidity retaining purposes. They have been much more active in this one as well, I even occasionally see them during the day, but of course, they're more active during the night. I am still in the process of adding shells, decoration, and renovating it in general, so it's not 100% completed.ImageImageImage
Now, unfortunately, they are STILL in those disgusting, hideous, painted shells. I really can't wait until they change so that I can remove the painted shells from the enclosure.ImageImageImage

New 40 gallon

That looks really nice! I especially like the background.

What kinds of shells are you offering? It can take time before a hermit crab decides to ditch a painted shell. Best we can do is give them what we think they’ll like better and hope for the best. http://www.hermitcrabassociation.com/ph ... hp?t=48249

I'm offering turbo, trochus, and Babylon shells. There are a few other shells that I am unsure of what they are. Here are pictures of the shells that I am unsure of.ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Well, the first shell has teeth in its opening, so that may deter the crabs. The really long one may just be too bulky.

The white ones I’ve seen before, but I don’t have much experience with those, so I’m not sure.

Yes, I've read of the teeth online, but I decided to just give it a go [WHITE SMILING FACE] I won't be surprised if they never use it, but it's worth a shot. I have plenty of other shells they'll likely choose and I'm hoping to see them use the shells when they get ready to.

Hello Image Congrats on the new tank! You should have some happy hermits! Image

I recommend turbos for Caribbean (Purple Pincher) crabs, those are their favorites. You can also try pink murex and virgin murex, I have gotten mine to accept those. There are incorrect types of shells to buy, refer to the guide here on the HCA to find proper shells.

Good luck! :)

I have turbos available to them, also, I will surely check out murex shells Image

Update: I just checked online and seen that one of the shells above was a murex Image

The first is a frog shell which is often too thick and heavy, along with being the wrong shape. Es sometimes come in heavily modified small shells of this species, but as the snail grows the shape changes too much to be comfortable.

Not sure on the second, but a definite no to anything except possibly violas.

Third is a possibly a black murex. These tend to be very thick and heavy with a wide opening and narrow interior. Not ideal for hermits though the rare one might like it.
