Heater help!
Hi. My kids bought hermit crabs at the beach. We got them home in plastic cabes, but we knew rhey needed more. Question is: what is the best side hanging heater for a 10 gallon aquarium? I hear the under cage ones arent good. Thanks

Undertank heaters are widely used by many crab keepers, it's where people place them that make them bad! People tend to put them on the bottom of the tank, which cooks molting crabs. You should put them on the back or side of the tank on the outside to avoid this. They come with a sticky side for the purpose of sticking them to the glass. You can also use a nighttime bulb.JNorman0502 wrote:Hi. My kids bought hermit crabs at the beach. We got them home in plastic cabes, but we knew rhey needed more. I never liked adhesive backed heating pads, they don’t heat well. I recommend Ultratherms
You can get those from Amazon, BeanFarm, or directly from the Reptile Basics website.

Yes, you can use that. I use duct tape, Reflectix, painter tape, or packing tape. They all work greatciaraalston wrote:StellaCrab wrote:I never liked adhesive backed heating pads, they don’t heat well. Re: Heater help!
Thanks! One last question that I JUST thought of. I'm at work and I've been researching old forums and basically reading this page alllllllllll night long. Anyways, I found a cabinet at work and my first thought was "omg that would be an awesome 3 or even 4 layer tank!" But then I realized it would take like a foot to a foot and a half of substrate just to fill the bottom. Anyways. Is there such a thing as too much substrate? Everyone always talks about non enough substrate, add more, they need more. But is there a point when a medium crab has too much substrate? Probably a dumb question but I am just curious. You don’t have a limit to substrate!ciaraalston wrote:Thanks! One last question that I JUST thought of. Re: Heater help!
Hi! Welcome to the HCA!
As far as using a cabinet from work - is it made of real wood? If so, is the wood listed on the safe food list? Is it free from chemicals? (no stain/paint/clear coat) Lots of questions would need to be addressed before you go through all of the work. Hermits also need a humid environment - could the humidity ruin it? What needs to be done to make it hermit crab safe?

Oh! i wasn't planning on actually using the cabinet, just was wondering about the substrate if someone ever did use something that large. I'm sorry, i should have said that better. LolGotButterflies wrote:Hi! Welcome to the HCA!
