Hamster wheels

Post by ashleylovesyou » Wed Jul 25, 2018 10:39 am

I'm thinking about getting a hamster wheel for my crabitat, but I can't decide which kind to get. I've read that you should avoid wheels that crabs' legs can get stuck in, like the wire wheels or any with holes in them, so those are out of the question.

I know lots of crabs like the "flying saucer" style, like these, but they don't really match the aesthetic of my crabitat:

I really like the way this one looks, though!:

Has anyone had any luck with upright wheels like the one above?

Many people have wheels which are upright in their tanks. The crabs seem to like it

I second the silent spinner. I was also looking at that tree/wheel but someone pointed out a crab may get stuck between the wheel and tree.

I was just about to make a post about this today, as I am investing in a wheel myself. I should just post about it separately due to all of the questions I am about to ask.

So, regarding the issue of crabs that can be stuck between the wheel and something else, what would you recommend if I were to add a wheel to my crabitat : to try to keep the wheel as close to the lateral surface as possible, in order to have something like 1mm of space between them, or to have instead a large space, more than 2.5cm/1 inch wide, between them? I wanted to mount a hamster-type wheel in my tank onto a small decorative "house" for aquarium to make it look like a water mill.

I hang mine upside down with command hooks. Crabs will not get stuck with this method. I don’t recommend mounting it to a house- they could get stuck that way.
