Does moss stink?

This is where you discuss the conditions of your crabitat -- temperature, humidity, substrate, decorating, etc.

Does moss stink?

Post by HHIhermies1004 » Wed Aug 22, 2018 11:07 pm

I just added some terrarium moss to my crabitat and I’m noticing a smell! It was not there before I added the moss and I literally added it a hour ago. I do not have problems with humidity I added it cause I like the look and heard the crabs like playing In it and snacking on it.

I basically added a chunk at a time in the enclosure and misted it to get it damp. Any insight would help thanks.

Did it boost the humidity? Could it be just a humid, moist smell? When mine gets really humid it has a different “odor” to it. I’d take out the moss and smell that to see if that’s what you are smelling...

I've changed it for you, but I thought you can change it yourself... regardless, its done!

Moss may have an earthy smell, but not really what you described.

I noticed a slightly different smell when we added moss too. It's not a terrible smell, more like a damp, sort of musty, dirt smell.

before we added the moss to the tank we soaked it in dechlorinated water for several minutes. While the moss soaked we squeezed it to help it absorb more water. When its ready, the moss will soak up a good bit of the water. Before adding the moss to the tank we gently squeeze some the water out so it is just about dripping. You can maintain the moistness with your mist bottle as required.

Thank you!! Yes when I mean stink I meant just after it rained wet dirty. I put a lot in the tank. So I’m taking a bunch out. First time dealing with tanks that require humidity. Typically used to needing straight heat for desert environments.
