Sphagnum moss

Post by Wlfwo » Sun Mar 24, 2019 3:11 pm

I picked up some organic sphagnum moss for terrarium use, I am going to re-hydrate it with distilled water, can I stick some in with the crabs or soak some in my regular water?
I can hear my 75g whispering from the barn.

Always use dechlorinated water. 2 drops of prime for one gallon.

Sphagnum moss

Like Xenocrab said, always use dechlorinated water to soak your moss. You can add some dry moss also if you’d like. I soak mine in dechlorinated water for about 5 minutes, squeeze the excess water out, then add to tank. My crew seems to like their moss a little more on the dry side so I don’t mist it too often but it’s up to you. You can keep an eye on them and see how they like it the best.

Thanks, I'll need to make theirs separate then.

Distilled water for moss and substrate is safe for hermits. If you have really hard water it might be a better choice as there will be fewer minerals to cause build up when you need to rewet. I use tap for the sphagnum in my leopard gecko tanks and there's mineralization on the surface from it drying out all the time. I actually switched to distilled for my crested's moss so it will last longer.

Thanks, I will watch for that as Indiana has a lot of limestone, but I also run a water softener so it may not be an issue.
