Humidity help

Post by Oliviet#1 » Tue Apr 02, 2019 8:28 am

There are three crabs in my twenty gallon tank, and I can’t keep the humidity steady. I have 5-6 inches of substrate which is a mixture around 2/5 of eco earth and 3/5 of play sand. The house humidity is around 60% according to the acurite weather stations. They aren’t very accurate because they change too much and I even calibrated them. One was two or three percent off, and the other one was seven percent off. Even then the humidity gets too high and low. When I vent the lid it drops fast to the 70s. And when I cover and most it goes into the eighties and nineties. Please help.
I have had pets in the past, but my family can’t have any furry or feathered ones due to allergies. I usually try my best to help and currently trying to set up a crabitat. I also try to treat others with Love!❤️

What kind of lid do you use? And how dry does the substrate feel when you touch it?

Larger water pools or adding bubblers to the pools can help.

I use a a imagitarium lid with plastic wrap and a towel on top. I felt the substrate and it doesn’t feel dry but it doesn’t feel super wet either. The pools are and inch or less deep and only a 2-4 inches across.

Your tank is pretty new so your humidity will be high for awhile, it should balance out. High humidity will not hurt them.

My humidity is always in the 80s and sometimes into the 90s. As stated, it won't hurt the crabs to have higher humidity.

I just don’t want to have mold growth, bacteria bloom, etc. should I just keep it covered and wait for it to drop down?
