This is where you discuss the conditions of your crabitat -- temperature, humidity, substrate, decorating, etc.

Heat lamp yes or no?

Post by hermitsrus1966 » Sun Sep 20, 2020 11:47 am

Hello! I have a 90 gallon with a 60 watt heat lamp in one corner of the tank it is hanging in the tank not on top. I am aware that heat lamps kill humidity and dry substrate but I found ways around that. I have to wet substrate down every day in spots that need it also for humidity I have a moist moss pit for both the crabs and for humidity boost. I am able to to keep the tank at about 80 humidity and 80 degrees fahrenheit. The crabs have plenty of places to get away or hide from the heat lamp. Though the crabs don't really hide from it in no shape or form it does not seem to affect them. In fact they sometimes hang out under it. I am wondering about this because I received hate for it. Thank you and hope you guys can help or give me some advice!

It doesn’t really matter how you maintain good conditions so long as it gets done.

If you’re comfortable with your setup I don’t see why you would have to change it.

Ok. I wanted to double check cause this person said that I could burn my crabs by having it so low. Which is it is 8 to 14 inches away from the sub. But they seem to be doing really well.

Animals can burn themselves by touching heating fixtures, but if there’s no way for them to climb onto it it’s likely a non-issue.

Ok. There is literally no way up on it but I found a crab on it once. How I have no idea. Any how that hasn't happened in a long time anyway. Also I have touched it ya know like on accident feeding them and it is so mild. I put my hand under it and it is so so so not hot it's warm but far from hot.

Like Joe stated, heating preferences are totally up to you! I personally don't like heat lamps, but to each's own!

I actually had my heat lamps inside my crabitats for almost 8 years, and never had a burnt crab.

I didn't think anything was wrong with it either!! But this person hated on me and got all up in my business saying I was gonna burn them. The heat lamp works great for me.

I run a 150W moonglo bulb year round all day and night. It keeps one end of the tank around 78-85 degrees. Then I put a UTH on the opposite end of the tank which raises the sand by a few degrees. Then there's about 4' in the center of the tank that is cooler. This gives my crabs three options for temperature.
