Hi everyone! How deep/big are your moss pits (I have a 40b for reference)...and do you moisten them?

Re: Moss pit question
We have various sizes moss pits depending on the tank and crab sizes. We will fill them with sphagnum moss that we soaked and wringed out to damp. If it's too moist they won't go in it. They even go in dry at times too. Ours will bury down and hide in them a lot!
I believe these are the ones we use.

Ahhh, so they are pretty deep! I was wondering when I read that some crabs would bury...bc I was just putting a thin layer moistened in a large saucer dish. They would crawl on it and munch some, but that was it. Now I know they can be deep, very cool!Motörcrab wrote:We have various sizes moss pits depending on the tank and crab sizes. All 5 of mine are under so I’m bored and brainstorming of ways to make their tank better once they all come up! I’ve already made them a new balance swing with a paper towel roll wrapped in jute, lol. Now I get to create a new and improved moss pit! What do you think of having the moss pits right next to each pool...to help absorb any spillover. I had thought of putting a larger Tupperware dish on the bottom and then a smaller one (bout half the size) in it...make the smaller one the pool (still big/deep enough to submerge) and then fill the remaining room in bottom/larger Tupperware with the moss...? Then also, the larger one stays put as a place holder for me to only have to change out the smaller one with water changes...and won’t have to worry about disturbing any diggers/molters in the future. Thoughts?

Thank you, Motörcrab (once again, haha)!

Re: Moss pit question
Something like that could be really good good a moss pit actually. Kind of like a veggie tray at a party. Except veggies and dip, moss and water. The outer tray would catch any splashed water. You could also keep an additional caddy moss pit too. When the caddy moss dries swap it with the moist moss.
Here are a few of our moss pits to give you some ideas. The first one we get like 5 crabs piled in it at once! The suction cups stick when they want to. We usually zip tie pieces of cholla as legs to help support them. Our crabs NEVER keep the moss in things on the ground. They love to redecorate and pull it out into the waters and everywhere else!
