My ~10gal crabitat. What do you think?

This is where you discuss the conditions of your crabitat -- temperature, humidity, substrate, decorating, etc.

My ~10gal crabitat. What do you think?

Post by HermitCrabsSweden » Mon Jan 04, 2021 11:07 am

Hello! I'm new to keeping hermit crabs but I've read quite a lot about them. Recently got two crabs in a ~10gal. What do you think? :D
Image
Humidity is around 90% and temperature is around 23˚C / 73˚F. Substrate is sand and I feed them Hikari Crab cuisine pellets and a variety of fresh fruits / vegetables.
I use this salt: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Aquarium-Syste ... B0069RD89S
I use this to make water safe: https://www.amazon.co.uk/JBL-Biotopol-C ... ies&sr=1-1
Thanks for reading lol.

[Edit] Thank you for all the response! Here's a link for all of you who can't see the picture: https://i.imgur.com/QDXz2jk_d.webp?maxw ... lity=grand

The photo of your tank is not showing up for me.

it looks pretty good for your first crabitat
a lot better than my first one
i would’ve recommended adding some plants they they can climb up you know like more things added into the emptier parts toward the top of the tank
i have these coconut climbing mats from pets mart along the back wall of my tank (they had bad reviews bc they don’t stick well so i found another way to hang them up)
in my crabitat i like to have most of the side and back walls covered with things to climb
i have plants on the side walls and the coconut mats in the back
but be careful if you add more stuff bc there is a difference in crowding your tank vs having more things to climb if that make sense
be sure to give them enough floor space while having more things up in the higher parts of the tank
but totally just a suggestion but it looks great!
i use a ratio of 5:1 playsand to eco earth in my tank
also i would take a look at the hermit crab nutrition guide just to be sure you are providing your crabs a complete diet
also i never heard of or used those products for my crabs water so idk if they are safe or not (someone else might know) i use seachem prime and instant ocean for the salt water

I can’t see it either...

Welcome though, the HCA is a great resource to find everything you’ll need for your little guys!

I think it’s a good start! Considering how open it is, you could try adding more cover or hiding places.

I agree with more cover/huts/hides. Greenery always helps provide a more natural vibe too! You can find it at Michael’s Craft Store or a Hobby Lobby. Some would say avoid the fabric plants. Amazon would definitely have some to choose from and then aquarium plants work also and usually have suction cups. You’re off to a good start though for your first tank, have fun with it!

It looks pretty good overall, just a few minor corrections to be made. I agree with adding more hiding places, also make sure to add some more calcium and protein to their diet. I can't how many shells are there but just in case you don't know, 3-5 extra per crab. I tried to zoom in on the terminator and I think it says 23 (correct me if I'm wrong, it's a bit blurry), that's a bit low, try to aim for closer to 27C (or 80F). Otherwise, looks great!
Edit: thermometer, not terminator...

Its certainly a great start, anything else is a bonus really! The only thing I would suggest is considering getting another UTH, while 23C isn't bad, its a little on the cooler side and crabs typically enjoy higher temps.
