Hi, I’m currently getting ready to buy a new tank for my crabs. I have 4 crabs around an inch and a half. This tank will be a front opening terrarium, with the size being 36x18x18. I plan on buying 2 large heat mats. I currently have one of these on the back of my current 10 gallon tank: https://www.petsmart.com/reptile/enviro ... 51426.html
Would something like the be a good idea? And if so, where would be a good place to put them? I was thinking on either side of the back of the tank, but I’m not sure that work well. Also, I should place the mat above the substrate, correct? And would you recommend any good heat mats? Thanks!!!
Heat Mat Placement
Re: Heat Mat Placement
Ultratherm, most of us use these. They are non sticky, can be insulated over, are movable. I stick mine on with packing tape. I think I got mine at bean farm, but reptile basics has them also. Bean farm had a sale when I got mine, so they won. LOL

I can hear my 75g whispering from the barn.

Sorry, forgot the last part. I have mine across the back and also on one side. As above the substrate as I can get it. Overlaps just a bit.

Re: Heat Mat Placement
Hi! A majority of crabbers prefer the Ultratherm, and Flukers brand of UTH heaters. They come in a wide range of sizes and can also be covered with insulation to direct more heat into the tank. The Ultratherms can be purchased from Reptile Basics, and The Bean Farm online. Each place has slightly different sizes avaliable.
You may want to consider adding a thermostat to the UTH. That way it will shut off the heater once it get to your high temperature setting. An inexpensive version can be purchased for around $20 on Amazon.
The heaters should be places on the rear of the enclosure instead of the bottom. You want to heat the air rather than the substrate. It can extend below the sub, but that may dry the substrate quicker.

Re: Heat Mat Placement
I have had a couple of these exact ones (zoomed) and tbh, they didn’t work very well to raise the temp. I ended up on BeanFarm instead getting an ultratherm as big as would fit on the back of my tank above substrate...I then insulated with cardboard, tin foil and gorilla tape. Works wonderfully and it raised the temp several degrees!Becca24 wrote:Hi, I’m currently getting ready to buy a new tank for my crabs. I have 4 crabs around an inch and a half.
