Newly Upgraded 65 Gallon

Post by HappySmiley » Mon Mar 22, 2021 2:59 pm

Hello Everyone!

Went on a girls' trip in July with my mom, sister, niece and daughter. Ended up with some hermit crabs. My sister got some for her daughter and I was really kind of pressured into getting got mine. Fast forward to now and I have four hermit crabs since my niece lost interest pretty quickly. I know I could give hers a good home with some friends. With the extra crabs, I upgraded from my original 10 gallon to this much larger one. Image

We're in Michigan so getting temp up was a challenge. I originally had a smaller UTH from Bean Farm and my sister had a cheaper mat but both of those I could barely maintain 75 degrees. I wanted 11x35 but they were out of stock so ended up buying two 11x17 from reptile basics I put on the back but found I still need my 6x17 on the one side to get the temp up to 80. I have a blanket on top and will actually cover the full tank when the temp seems to drop. However, all four crabs seen to LOVE their new home! Image

There's eight inches of substrate now. On Friday, I added some nets on back and one upper with shells. I have one more net to put on other side but wanted to see how they liked the first one. I added a ladder last night since it didn't seem anyone was trying to climb the nets. I saw Myrtle climbing the ladder this morning and he definitely made it up since all the shells were moved around.

Attached some pictures for feedback. I'm trying to keep it simple but enough for the four little guys to enjoy.

My sister's crabs seem to hang out (Avalon and Clair - Clair still hasn't changed from original painted shell from July!!!)

And the originals I had hang out (Myrtle climbing on temp gauge and Chester the smallest)ImageImageImageImage

They are precious! Your tank looks great! I love the ladder. Only feedback I would offer is maybe adding some greenery...to mimic more of their natural environment.

Welcome to the HCA and enjoy your little crab family!
