Subtrate drying out....

Post by LindaLou » Tue May 25, 2021 3:56 am

So I finally go my temp and humidity where it should be but my subtrate is drying out next to my heater. And obviously that's drawing the moisture from the rest of the sub as well. Do I need to put new subtrate in and take the dry out? Any and all advice welcome! Thank you in advance

No, drying out is normal and is what puts moisture into the air. You can just mist the substrate as needed.

A couple of my heat mats go below the level of the sub by a couple of inches. The sub there gets dried out. I will just pour a little dechlor water along the edge every now and then, like a quarter of a cup divided here and there along the edge.

OK but when I wet it back there my humidity goes thru the roof.

Yep. Higher humidity can increase mold growth, but it is not harmful for the crabs. My humidity is almost always over 90%.
