Real coconut

Post by Hermiesguardian » Fri Dec 08, 2017 8:43 pm

I got a real coconut to make a coconut hut, cut it in half, took out most of the meat (as much as I could), put a door in it (well, my husband did all the work). I put it in their crabitat. Is it ok? I assume they'll eat what's in there. But will it go bad before then?

Cool! I know it’s safe, but I am not sure if it’ll spoil, or rot.
Maybe someone can fill in for you.

It will go moldy in a few days so keep an eye on it. If you have enough crabs and they are hungry enough they certainly have the ability to clean it off completely!

I only have 2 above ground. It was really hard to get the flesh out. We got out as much as we could. I'll try again in a day or 2.

I've put fresh coconut shells in the tank before. The very first time it went bad and grew white mold all over it but the last 3 or 4 times I have done it the crabs have managed to clean it off completely and even eat some of the shell. it's amazing what these little guys can do when the mood strikes them.

Unfortunately we never have a clue when the mood will strike them.

Yep. I normally wait about a month between coconuts and by the time I give it to them they are ready.

To prevent molding could I not try baking it after cleaning it out well?

When we clean out coconuts we use a screwdriver kind of like an ice chopper. Once the coconut is scored it's easier to get under it and pry the smaller chunks out.

It goes bad overnight, but our crabs love to drink the fresh coconut water!

We dehydrate a majority of the fresh coconut. Because it's so dense it takes a long time depending on the size of the pieces. If it's not dehydrated long enough it will mold.
