Moving a 40b
Moving a 40b
So It looks like I will likely be moving somewhere with cheaper rent in the next 6-8 months. I have a 40 breeder and I was wondering if it would be possible to move without taking the crabitat apart. If I were to get 3 of my friends and we each took a corner, could we lift the tank or would the weight of the substrate bust out the bottom? Through a happy accident when I was re-enforcing the tank stand I broke the top platform that the tank sits on, completely off and had to re-build that. Anyway it's now removable from main body of the tank stand. So maybe i could lift the platform part with the tank on it. I'll get pictures to explain better tomorrow.

No way I would risk it. The capacity is 450lbs. You could easily manage that weight with 2-3 friends, but are you will to risk the tank glass shattering? The tank can hold the weight, but not with the torque on the glass and frame that would occur while you are moving it.
Empty it and move it.

Re: Moving a 40b
That's unfortunate, I just got them settled in a couple months ago. So you can see the blocks I have holding the tank in place, those are on all 4 sides, and the piece the tank sits on is 3/4 inch plywood screwes on top of a 2×4 frame with the cheap particle board as just a cap so it looks nice. At the bottom of the blocks is where the entire top piece with the frame and plywood lifts off the stand, if we leave the tank on that, would it be safe then? If you think it would still be unwise I will empty it out for the move.

You do you. I'm not telling you what to do. Only that *I* wouldn't risk it. Tank weight capacities are determined with the tank not moving around. Torque on glass of any kind is a killer. Tanks aren't meant to be moved while full.

Thank you, I will take your advice. You've got much more experience with this stuff than me lol. I will be emptying for the move

Yes, plenty of time. Now I just have to hope everyone is up before the move lol

Re: Moving a 40b
Alright. The move is happening in the coming month or 2 depending on the banks and all that stuff. So 3 of my 4 are up. One is smaller than ping pong ball size, ones a little bigger, and one is golf ball size. Those 3 won't be down any time soon, how long can I keep them in a 10g prior to the move? If I have to I have a 20g i think, I could clean but it's a tall so it's not much more footprint than the 10. I just don't want to risk any of them being down when I have to clear the tank out. My largest has been down for a week or so now. I tend to be up late and haven't seen him so I think he may be molting unfortunately.

Re: Moving a 40b
If he does moult, you just need to dig him up (dig from one corner and work from one side of the tank to the other, so you approach the crab buried from the side rather than the top as its slightly less likely to cause cave collapse). Then for the remainder of the moult, let him preform a surface moult (may need to ISO). Keep him warm, humid and in a dark place and once he has hardened up, a quick dip in the freshwater pool before introducing him back to the main set-up.
The other crabs should be fine for a couple of weeks without access to deep substrate, particularly if they have had a good moult or two in your care/in captivity.

Awesome, the three smaller ones all had at least 2 molts I'm aware of. So I'll move them to the 10 or 20 g a week or 2 before the move. As for levianthan, just need to catch him top side. I'm fairly certain he molted when I got him a few months ago so I don't know if he would actually be down for a molt, hopefully not.
