Substrate consistency clarification

Post by legobrickmaster » Wed Dec 07, 2016 2:18 am

Reading over the guides on these forums, the substrate should be kept moist so it's sandcastle consistency. When we setup the tank, we mixed sand and fiber with water, until it was sandcastle-like.

My question is how exactly do we maintain this consistency after the substrate is added to the tank?

I can mist the top with water, but how about the sand further down, is it still the right consistency so long as temp/humid are steady? If not, how do I get water into the lower layers so it's still sandcastle throughout?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Lego. It sort of stays thst way. I mist every other/every day. Seems the moisture stays. I turn over my tank after every molt. The sub is a little drier in some areas but for the most part, its moist.

It should stay moist to the bottom with the humidity. In fact, the bottom tends to be more moist as sand is not a very porous material, so most liquid tends to pool down there. If you know all your crabs are up it can be a good idea to stir your sub up a bit. This can be difficult at times though, as crabs tend to go under ground at different times. If you are concerned about your sub you can do a test with a pencil/chopstick etc, against the glass and shove it down to the bottom of the tank. The tunnel should hold to the bottom. :)

Thanks all, that's what I thought but wanted to make sure. Our consistency seems about right, and the crabs seem to be digging and enjoying themselves.
