Questions about cleaning tank

So both my crabs are up and I want to clean the tank (just top of sand really) and add more sand. It seems my sand has settled a little. There is a tunnel that I can clearly see. My question is can I put sand on top of it or do I need to just put the sand around it and not fill the tunnel up. Thank you for your help.
When do I need to do a deep clean? And what exactly does that consist of? Sifting all the sand in the tank?

I do not recommend doing deep cleans. They do more harm than good bye taking out good bacteria. You can safely add 1" of substrate every 24 hours (without pressing down of course).

Also if your sub gets visibly dirty you may consider adding isopods to your tank- they are your own little clean up crew, check out the guide on here.

Well it doesn't usually but I placed a piece of wood with moss on it in the tank for them to eat. They made a mess! lol So that's why I'm just cleaning the top bit of sand. Thank you for reply. I appreciate it. About got it put back together.

I agree with what Hermiearth said. Deep cleans are only necessary if there is a bacterial bloom. (Imo) I also do not recommend filling in the tunnel.

Isopods are a great addition to the tank- wonderful clean up crew- and great to watch as well.

Thank you all!! I added an inch of sand. Just put it in there and smoothed it out on the top to make it even. Didn't press down or anything like that.

I made so much effort to make the tank really neat and clean!! Those little devils tipped things over, dug holes, threw moss everywhere and knocked the plants over! They like to be messy!
