HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Sorry to be asking so many questions! But here's another one. I see that moss is approved (and even desired) for crabitats. Does anyone know about plain old yard moss? I live in the woods, so my yard is all natural (almost no grass, lots of trees, undergrowth and moss, and of course no pesticides).

What does everyone think?

I'd say you have to be careful. Some moss carries bugs. I will tell you that from my personal experience I have some beautiful moss that grows in my butterfly garden that is organic that I put in my crabitat that is a green ground moss. I don't know the name of it. It has gotten absolutely devoured in all three of my crabitats. I have isopods in my crabitats as well as crabs... so they could be eating it as well. No clue. I can't live in their room (unfortunately ) It needs to not only be pesticide free but fertilizer free too Hope that helps.

Thanks! Mine is definitely free of any pesticides and fertilizers. It's truly just from the woods. I may try a little bit. It's very green and very pretty. Maybe they'll like it. Unfortunately, my three guys seem to be pretty picky eaters, so I'm trying different things.

I'm going to be adding 2 live moss pits/beds to help with humidity and a small pool with an air stone. I don't have much moss here so I ordered some. It was actually supposed to come today!

Moss from the yard or surrounding areas are fine. Just be careful where you source like others have said and nuke it in the microwave for a couple of rotations (30 secs should do IMO, ive gone up to a minute on bigger balls on moss abd its been fine.) Just be wary of the smell!
