Tank size question
Tank size question
I was a member of another hermit crab group on Facebook until I got removed, but one question that has always bothered me is, why would they tell me my 20 Gallon tank is not an appropriate long term home for my crabs and that I needed to get a 29 Gallon? My mom and I have already agreed that we would not do that until my crabs are absolutely too big.

Re: Tank size question
Larger is better because you will not need to replace the tank as quickly. It is recommended to buy the largest tank you can afford and have room for. 20 gallons can house up to 5 crabs. But will definitely need to be upgraded as the crabs get larger.

I had a 20 gallon at one point. I liked it. I just needed something bigger. I like the extra space of the 29 though.

Re: Tank size question
Some groups believe in buying a larger tank now so when the crabs get larger you don't have to upgrade later.
The HCA understands that family's have to sink a ton of money into what they thought was a cheap $5 pet and instead asks owners to be mindful of how much growth their crab is doing and to upgrade when it's time, which in some cases will be years down the road, but in other cases may need to be now if the crabs are already large. We also understand that the majority of crab owners will change their minds after a couple of years and re-home, or lose the crabs to PPS quickly, and this way they aren't overwhelming themselves.
