Hey guys! I know this will sounds like a stupid question but we are trying to open ourselves up for more hermies, potentially, and at the same time trying to avoid any possible overcrowding issues. We have 3 medium to large/medium hermies in our main 55 g tank currently. I’m working on prepping our 20g tank to sit as a second level on half of the main tank. So would that mean the total gallons would be 75? What would be the max number of medium to medium to large PP’s you would recommend so that the hermies still have comfortable place to roam and hang out? Thank you!

Re: Adding smaller tank to larger main tank
The amount and the surface area of substrate is what dictates the amount of crabs a tank can safely support, since molting is what is most dangerous for them and where they need the most space for themselves. The added substrate height will be good for growing crabs as larger ones benefit from 8-12 inches, but it won't add any space for more crabs to molt at the same time. 55 gallons are pretty narrow and that can create issues with big crabs who are tunneling in the same area as molters.
I would recommend no more than 7 if this is where you want to stop with tanks for the time being. If you are looking at this as a permanent home, a 55 is decent for 2 to 3 jumbos, but not all will make it to that point so there is wiggle room while they are younger and smaller.
