Ultratherm?

Post by AwesomeHermit » Sun Nov 26, 2017 10:15 pm

Should I use an Ultratherm? I can't use the one which I currently have for heat because it is simply too small. I only might be able to get the 6 by 23 Ultratherm for my 20 gallon long, and some of you might remember my still unsolved temperature problems in the tank. It might be a lot of convincing because I just don't know if it would work, knowing that when I had one for my 10 gallon it didn't work. But that is probably because it was too small.

The thing that makes Ultratherms a good choice for crabbers is that they can be insulated along the back, which improves their output. Sans insulation I don't think an Ultratherm of the same wattage gets too much warmer than a Zoomed - but zoomeds aren't designed to be insulated & may become a fire hazard if not used correctly... so an Ultratherm is potentially a more effective heater.

Because we heat the air with them, you want the size that covers the length of your tank.

Would a 6 by 23 Ultratherm be long enough? I still don't know if I will get it.

What is the temperature of the room it is in? Is the tank sitting along a wall that is against the outside, or is it along a wall that has another room on the other side? How cold does it get outside in winter? Is your house drafty, is it sitting in a colder spot?

The temperature of the room is a low of 73 and a high of like 77, it is a wall against the outside but I can't feel a difference in the temperature, and it can get cold in winter. But the concern is that it can get to the low 70's by the night. What is drafty, sorry, and it is sitting in honestly a warmer spot because the house temperature changer thingy is in the same room as it.

Drafty is where you get air leaks that cause cool spots or areas. I have on in my kitchen that causes the space near my sink to hit 50 degrees sometimes in winter. Also spelled as draughty.

I think the Ultratherm you mentioned is the right size. Your room temp is good and that size will keep things even for you!

Okay! The room only gets drafty in Summer when it is like 80 degrees.

Since Ultratherms can be insulated, can an aquarium background be put "under" them? The background would obviously go on the back of the tank, then the ultratherm.

I have my Flukers set up with fabric in front of it for decor.

I really debated this as well because ghe 150 came with one across the back and the previous owners had several smaller UTH's attached to the sides of the tank.

I'm an Ultratherm person 100% so I really considered whether or not I wanted the background, then an Ultratherm, then insulation OR Ultratherm (which would have defeated the purpose of a background as you would mostly see the UTH), then background, then insulation.

Since I ripped my Ultratherm ImageImageImage when removing it from the old tank, I have been waiting for the size I need to come back into stock to get a new one.

We ended up ditching the background and are getting new plants to replace all the old pinched to death ones. Image

I have two Ultratherms coming for the new Ruggie tank, and the plan is use the same fabric/uth/foil/cardboard sandwich for them, too. :)

Not so much as they necessarily need to be but they are able to be safely insulated.

If you are having trouble keeping temps high enough you can insulate an ultratherm to boost the heat.

I am getting more and more heat intolerant by the year, so my bedroom is around 65 to 70 in the summer, and I've been waking up to it at 52 some mornings these past few weeks because I have the heat off in here. Most of the time it is around 60-65. I know my Rug likes it toasty, so I figure a little boost to the heater wouldn't hurt.

Sandwiching it also helps the fabric to lay taught, and I can pop the whole thing on and off as one unit rather than mess around with different layers. The insulation is more of a bonus.

Thank you. Just mentioning, quite a while ago I managed to boost the heat so when I wake up to check on the crabs at night, it is at 79 at the lowest, and 84 at the highest.
