salt water hermit crab / capture

I have noticed at high tide, hermit crabs are present. can these be pets?

Not really. Even though they come above the water line to eat, they do require a full marine environment in captivity. Some species get enormous and would need a very large saltwater setup, live sand and live rocks along with equipment would set you back at least a grand or so, salt isn't cheap! These crabs often will eat everything in the tank so it would have to bare and boring. Depending on the species and the location a chiller may also be required which is another five hundred plus. They aren't the same marine hermits species as are found in aquarium shops who have been chosen due to temperature requirements and temperament with other species.
