Crabby to-do list

This is where you discuss the conditions of your crabitat -- temperature, humidity, substrate, decorating, etc.

Crabby to-do list

Post by robinwhiskers » Wed Dec 13, 2017 3:09 pm

Does anyone else have a to-do list of things that need to be fixed or added to the crabitat? This is mine.

1. Buy new UTH (I have TWO on my 10 gallon crabitat but the tank is still getting in the low 70's...tell me which UTH you use because mine are obviously junky)

2. Add new layer of substrate (I don't have any play sand right now but I'll have to get some...my crabs have been living on the same top layer of sub for like a year and it's impossible to get all the poop, dropped hay, etc. and after a while the sand gets flattened and stows away in cleaned bowls and such so there's less sand that I started with!)

3. Buy new water bowls (because my crabs are constantly growing and my current ones are getting a bit small)

4. Order new food from the Hermit Crab Patch (my crabs usually get prepared foods and they must get tired of eating the same 5+ HCP foods over and over sometimes!)

5. Upgrade! (I want to get a 20 gallon one day, the only thing is I don't know where in my room I'd put it.)

6. After upgrading, get more crabs! (I mean, why wouldn't you?)

Be careful of upgrades, since that often leads to more crabs and a premature upgrade. ;)

Currently im just in the process of pooling ideas and resources together for an upgrade.

(Many US crabbers have great success with ultratherm, so i would suggest getting those.

Oh gods yes.

I have to:

Replace ultratherm I accidentally ripped while installing 150 gallon tank.

Pick up reflectix at HD.

Wash all the baskets and items that came with the 150 gallon and sort a couple hundred shells and decide what I need to purge.

Replace all the picked over artifical plants.

Clean up 2 large bamboo poles (4ft long) that we cut last year and put them in the tank.

Order a screen lid that fits the new tank and redo the plexiglass and plastic inserts that the previous owners used because my fatty cats keep collapsing them.

Make some sort of supportive base for my deep pools because tunneling crabbos cause them to sink into the substrate.

It's NEVER "done".

If your looking for ideas, and your handy with tools (or know someone) you could make a PVC base and then zip tie some eggcrate on top as a platform for the pools - or use the plexiglass, drill some holes and zip tie on...

Sigh... it's SO never done. And having just upgraded, there are a million & one little things to be done, like fitting a clasp on the lid (it's just books holding down the top now  ), finding craft mesh for the hamster wheel (two craft stores inexplicably didn't have any?!), drilling hanging holes in the top brace, and making up new cardboard/Styrofoam insulation panel for the winter, calibrating the hygrometers (one is def. off)... I keep the growing list on my fridge.

Small reptitherms have a pretty wimpy output & shouldn't be insulated... I'd just order an Ultratherm in the size you want & insulate it... much better solution, usually. Especially if you do live where it gets cold.

I don't have to-do lists, I just buy stuff when I need it.

Yeah! I added the new layer of sub and now I see exactly how gross the layer under it is.  Anyway, I don't have access to Ultratherms anywhere so any other brand suggestions for a UTH?
