Overcrowded?

Post by karlys » Sun Dec 24, 2017 6:18 pm

Hello,

Happy Holidays!

Some well-meaning relatives got me more crabs for Christmas... Which, I'm sure you can understand is conflicting because yay crabs! But boo for not asking. I'm worried about overcrowding now. To remind everyone, I have a 75 gallon tank with a 40 gallon breeder as a topper. And, now, the tank has:
2 jumbo PPs
1 medium-large PP
1 medium PP
6 tiny PPs
2 medium strawberries
1 tiny E

Is this overcrowded? I would hate to have to find new homes for any of them but I don't think I'll be in a place to get a bigger tank for 2-5 years, at least.

Even with the most generous spacing rule of 5 gallons per crab you end up at 65 gallons. Subtract some for the tiny’s also. You sound fine to me!

I personally would leave it at that. If it ever comes to it, you need to upgrade once they all double in size, but that should be 2-5 years away anyway...
IMO your hit capacity, but not overcrowded.

I'm so glad that I don't have to figure out new living situations for anyone. I will make it VERY clear to my family that it's not okay for the future though. Thanks guys.

5 Gallons would not work with some very large crabs such as jumbos. But I do agree, it sounds fine.
One or hopefully two Clypeatus
Goodbye my little E. See you soon.
Bye Fred. You lasted almost 4 years with me. Hope you're with my E now! See you soon Reeba as well. I can't believe I lost you only after a month.
Crabbing for 4 years!

Ehh...to each his own. I’d personally say you are pushing it, but that is me. This is the way I look at it: jumbos about 15/20 g each, Es 10 g each, everything below 5 g each. THEN - factor in that you have Strawberries- they do not do well with overcrowding. In my opinion they are more fragile. I have four.

Once again, this is my opinion. If it were me, I would set up another tank.

Edit: I think jumbos themselves are recommended to have a 75 g tank
