Humidity drop

Post by Kermie16 » Sat Dec 30, 2017 10:08 am

With the colder weather and our heater keeping us from freezing to death, the temp in the tat has been staying stable around 79-80 with insulation. But the humidity has been dropping daily from low 80’s down to low 70’s every morning. I recently re-calibrated my hygrometer and so I know it is off by 2 degrees. I have press n sealed practically % of the tank. Bubblers are going 24-7 as usual. I have been having to mist the tank twice a day. I’m thinking of taking off the press n seal and just plastic wrapping or duck taping the whole tops of the tank and just leaving holes for the bubblers. What are your thoughts and recommendations?

Yep, moss pits will aid greatly with keeping humidity up.
If it gets dry, I like to take it all out and soak it in dechlorinated water to soften it back up.

I wonder if the air in the house is dry enough that the bubblers are lowering humidity by pumping dry air into the tank? :smt017

You could check by switching them off for a few hours to see what happens. I can't recall, but I feel like you had fairly deep pools, right?

Other than checking the bubblers, yeah, sealing up the lid is all I can think of.

Perhaps a piece of plexiglass would work? If not that, I would probably use a packaging tape so it was clear. Duct tape is dark. :)

I use press and seal on my humid tanks and you are right that in winter it doesn't work as well as it should. Packing tape works really well to create a solid seal and it holds up to the moisture. I use either plastic freezer bags or aluminium foil on cardboard to cover over the top.

Yep! I have 2 moss pits. One on second level and another on main level. Both have been recently re-soaked and wrung Out with FW. My pools are fairly deep - still covers are biggest crab. But I never thought of the bubblers bringing in dry air (smacking my head here!) LadyJinglyJones, I will definitely give the bubblers a break and see if that helps! I didn’t have any packing tape so I just sealed around the tank tops with duct tape so light can still come in. I did notice that my LED lights were also causing the humidity to drop faster so I’ve just been letting the crabs get natural light . Thanks for all of the great ideas and advice!!
