Moss Pits

Post by JoeHermits » Wed Apr 11, 2018 3:01 pm

Are there any significant advantages to using moss pits as opposed to piling it in a corner? I understand a pit would help keep the moss cleaner.

It's harder for the little boogs to bury the moss. And if it's off the ground, a moss pit doubles as climbing space/a second level, thereby helping to maximize useable tank space for them. Also, if you want to keep the moss as a moist moss pit, sand will def suck moisture out faster.

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

Using the moss in a pit allows you to rinse and reuse it. If you put it on the sub you definitely cannot do that. :)
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

I also always had a problem with moss molding over when put directly on the sub. Never had that issue with a container!

How often do you all rinse the moss? Every time it dries out? Any moss that seems to hold moisture better than others?

Oh! Btw, we have a moss pit below sub level and on second level. The little guys seem to like the below sub level more along with the isopods and the top seem to be more enjoyed by the larger crabbies:) As said above, it gives the crabs extra space to climb and be curious! I used to keep our moss on the sub and they would drag it everywhere. I’m a control freak and that was driving me nuts (lol!)!

I just leave it in until it breaks down too much and needs to be changed.

It really depends on your set up on how fast it will dry out!

Edited to add, they all seem to dry out at the same rate. Personally, my fave is the ZooMed sphagnum. It's pretty and fluffy and squeaks when it's new.
