Mold

Post by Moonlightdreams » Thu Apr 12, 2018 10:46 am

We've been battling mold (Had to restrain myself from saying 'Lord Voldemold'. . . . I'm such a Harry Potter geek. ) for a while now, and it's no fun. Mold creeps me out. We have various allergies in my house, including mold. How can we combat this? Dipping things in saltwater? Something else? Springtails and isopods are out, we are so not fond of bugs. :P We're cleaning the tank today, what can I do to prevent the mold from coming back with a vengeance?

Salt and airflow are the big ones that can help prevent mold, mix sand with drinking strength saltwater and soak everything else organic and allow it to dry completely before adding back to the tank. Getting rid of organic food sources for the mold (cocofiber, wood decor, hemp) is another option. Add in a fan, or figure out a way to allow airflow without sacrificing humidity (screen lid with a humidifier). It's the fact our tanks are sealed up so tight to hold in moisture that the mold has such a good playground!

Just a quick reminder that mold doesn't harm the crabs - it's just not good for us. :)
