Help! Spilled Ammonia

Post by piratetoothgir » Wed Apr 25, 2018 8:44 pm

I just spilled a small bit off ammonia in my room, and it stinks heavily. I quickly shut the closet door, which is about 20 feet from the spill, that’s where the crab tank is at.

I put a fan in the room pointing outward to draw out the fumes. I am praying that it didn’t get into my closet, it could kill my crabs!

This is awful!

Can you mop up the spill? Or is it carpet?

If you have airstones, I'd turn them off and consider sealing up any gaps well to stop the fumes from causing any irritation...

Air out the room well and it should be okay. It takes a fair bit of ammonia to actually cause damage. The smell is worse then the ammonia actually is!

Help! Spilled Ammonia

Post by piratetoothgir » Thu Apr 26, 2018 5:25 am

It’s carpet that got spilled on, just a small bit. I wiped that up quickly.
I took the storage crate that it spilled in outside, and the bottle of ammonia.

I tossed some baking soda in that area, and sprayed room spray that smells like lemons. Don’t worry, I didn’t go in the closet with it. I am a worried mess, if something goes wrong, I won’t be able to forgive myself.

I didn’t have time to seal anything up! I know I should have done that, but didn’t. I wasn’t able to smell the fumes inside to closet. I will seal up the tank openings, and the door today, just until I can rid of the leftover smell.

I have opened that bottle in the room before to cycle my fish tanks, but never let the smell go far. I am just praying something won’t go wrong, I cannot lose my precious crabs, they mean the world to me.

Okay, the smell is about gone, just faintly noticeable.
I opened the window to allow more ventilation.

The closet from which the crabs are doesn't smell at all, I sealed up the hood with painters tape, covering all the cracks.
I will remove the tape once the smell has fully disappeared.

I also got a little paranoid and ended up taping the door shut

Yes, relieved! I evicted the ammonia bottle out of the house, forever.
