False bottom survey!!

Post by ciaraalston » Tue Jul 17, 2018 1:27 am

I need y'alls help with this decision!
I'm setting up a 55 gal tank with 4 crabs. I Will have 8 to 10 inches of substrate, a mix of eco earth and sand. (I like more eco earth than sand if that matters)
Anyway, I've been doing a lot of research on false bottoms and I need to know if it would be worth adding it or a waste of time?
I know if a water bowl over flows or cracks it will flood the tank and kill any molters, which in itself makes it 100% worth it.... But what are the odds of that happening?
If you have a false bottom or don't have one, PLEASE leave your opinion on pros and cons and why you added it or didn't add it. Thank you!!!

Ps- here's a link to the video I've watched and the one I might be referencing to add

I have never bothered with one myself. Oversaturated sand can happen with or without a drainage area as sand is hygroscopic and likes to hold a ton of moisture when it can. Have space down there might prevent standing water, but supersaturated sand can still occur and is just as deadly, and will still cause bacterial blooms.

We also had a case where a member set up a false bottom and had a crab manage to get beneath it, she had to tear her giant tank apart and remove several molters just to get to it. They are smart, determined and strong little creatures.

I don’t have one in any of my tanks. I personally wouldn’t bother with setting one up, but that is me!

I don't have one, probably never will bother with one, and get super aggravated when people are told they HAVE to have them. No matter how well constructed they are, crabs can tear through them.

I appreciate all of you giving your input. We decided against it, because my crabs are already a mess climbing OUT of the tank (see my escape artist post in "Pictures") and i couldn't bear to have one get under the false bottom! Thank yall so much!!!
