Small Animal Wheels

Post by hermiwormi » Wed Jul 25, 2018 6:25 pm

I know someone posted about this earlier, but I had some questions of my own as well I am investing in a wheel for my crabs, but I'm unsure of the type of wheel to get.
I know if I got a flying saucer, I could just place it as is and slightly bury the base in the substrate. Would I need to attach craft mest to this type of wheel as with silent spinners?
For silent spinners, how do you all place it in the tat? Is craft mesh required for this one?
And I have asked this before, but how do the crabs even figure out how to use the wheels?

I turn the wheel upside down and hang it on command hooks. I place it a couple of inches above the substrate so the crabs don't hit anything when they are on the outside spinning around.Image

Sorry, it posted sideways.

It's okay. I see what you mean by keeping it above the substrate. Would the crabs be able to use it without mesh?

Well, they can, but their legs spread out and they walk sideways sometimes. I think it's really worth it. Gives them more room. I have had 3 in there at one time.

Right. I'll make sure to pick some up along with the wheel

I do the same thing hermiesguardian does. I use the Kaytee silent spinner wheel though.

Alrighty Image I think I may go for a silent spinner as well if my local pet store has any in stock. Especially considering the fact that the crabs can walk for 24 hours and longer.

I grabbed the kaytee spinner off Amazon that GB is talking about. It's not too loud
I just added mine today, I used jute twine to tie the mesh instead of zip ties because I forgot to buy them. It looks good and was super simple. If you need pictures or anything, I'm sure we've all got plenty to share
Let us know what you add and how they like it!!!

We bought silent spinners, added the craft mesh, even made a ramp up to the wheels with mesh. I put mine directly on the substrate. Crabs will crawl over, under and on top or dig and climb under it but I never had and reportable accidents or injuries! I don't think they crabs ever went to an amusement park and had to stand in line and wait to ride!
