White stuff hanging from 2nd store

Post by p2gg86 » Wed Aug 01, 2018 7:17 pm

I just notice some sort of white fungi/ bacteria hanging down from the under of the wooden 2nd floor that I built for the crabs. I wonder if those are any harmful to the crabs.

The other day I saw a little bug from their food dish and thinking it was just a food mite but then I saw another same kind upon my view in the moss pit. I didn't have picture of the mites as they move really fastImageImage

What type of wood is it?
It’s most likely because the wood isn’t treated or sealed. The molt itself is harmless to the crabs, but can cause problems in humans that have asthma or that get bad allergic reactions.

You can remove the piece of wood, and soak it in saltwater and airdry, otherwise, it’s fine to leave it.

It is grain plywood.
Yeah It is my careless for not treated the wood before I placed it in the tank. If the mold is harmless then it is fine but I still don't like it so I will remove it soon this weekend.

Plywood is made with a lot of glues and chemicals. The best possible outcome is that this is mold, otherwise it could be those chemicals leaching out in the heat and humidity. It is not recommended for use in a crab tank unless it has been completely sealed in a two part epoxy of some sort!

To be safe if those really chemical leaks, I shall remove them all. Still though I want a second story, acrylic materials should be acceptable?

Grab a big plastic container, like a butter bowl, and flip it upside down. Cut a hole for a door and maybe cover it with rocks or organic jute twine? If you do rocks, try aquarium safe silicone to attach them. I saw it on an old post here and it was a great hide plus it created a second level for them to climb up to and hang out on.
