Upgrading my hermies

Post by Crusty12 » Sun Feb 03, 2019 11:09 am

Hello everyone,
I am a new hermit crab owner & I have a 10 gallon with good humidity, temperatures, 6 inches of eco earth, natural coconut hide, cocnut fiber tunnel, a natural hemp net a, a fake reptule vine with fake plants to they can climb up high, it looks like a jungle and they seem to really enjoy it. I have a much bigger tank I want to upgrade them to in the summer and I was wondering what's the best way to disinfect it cause they are such delicate creatures.should I just use destilled water ? I got the tank of kijiji and I was also wondering also if I should I get an aquarium lid for it or screen top?, my lid now for my 10 gallon is a screen top with plastic wrap to keep the humidity around 70-80%. Let me know.

I use vinegar to clean crab tanks. No chemicals. I always recommend glass lids. That's what I use. I got a free 55 gallon tank that was crusty. Took me about an hour to clean it to a sparkle with vinegar. I like the green scratchy pads and paper towels. I rinse out the vinegar with dechlorinated water.

Thank you so much! I knew not to use chemicals but didn't know if vinegar was okay. I'll do that when I upgrade and I'll check out a glass top for it! Appreciate it.

I have used vinegar as well. I used saran wrap on my first two tanks, but the 55 gallon I got for free has a custom-sized plexiglass lid. I really scored when I found this tank! LOL!

I always consider a glass top a must have purchase. We originally started with screen tops with plastic wrap. I found the plastic wrap to be annoying dealing with every time I did something inside the tank. I also think the glass top helps hold more heat and humidity in the tank too.

If you add more plants and things for inside the tank it is safe to boil them on the stove to disinfect. I normally use straight tap water and bring it to a boil before adding items to it. Boiling water should remove any chlorine it may contain.
