Good morning!
I have a few questions about thermostats. I have never had to use one before with my previous tank set ups and pets. However, I feel there is a real need to invest in one for my little crabby buddies.
Does anyone have a suggestion on the best brand or type to use?
How do they work anyway? Does the heater plug into the thermostat, then the thermostat probe goes into the tank and turns the heater on and off regarding to the temperature of the probe? At least that is how I am imagining that they work LOL
Thermostat Questions
Re: Thermostat Questions
yup, that's how the one I have works at least! thermostat plugs into the wall, heater plugs into thermostat, thermostat probe goes in tank. I put the probe close to the heater and set the thermostat to the highest temp I'd want the tank to hit.
my thermostat is a Zilla, not particularly fancy but it gets the job done. I do have to check every so often to make sure I haven't accidentally jostled the controls and set it too low or high, but that is only a concern if you are disorganized like me, lol.

Re: Thermostat Questions
I bought a cheap thermostat on Amazon for around $20. It's claims it's for reptiles, plant germination, and brewing beers.
It works exactly like doth explained. I have my probe located about dead center of my tank compared to near the heater. I also keep my Acurite near the probe so I can easily see if there are any drastic changes.
I run two UTH's on my tank. One on the side and one across the back. The side is mainly for the winter months when it gets colder. That will be unplugged in a few more weeks. Anyway, I keep the thermostat on the larger UTH locater on the rear of the tank. My thoughts are the larger heater will raise and lower the temperature more than the smaller heater.

Re: Thermostat Questions
If you want top of the line, I really enjoy my Herpstats. I have both the 1 and 2 models now, and will be purchasing a few 6s when we upgrade my reptiles. I did a review a while back:
