Heat Problem

Post by Hermit lover 360 » Tue Nov 03, 2020 8:15 pm

I have literally tried everything to keep my heat up but it still only comes out to about 69-75 degrees even at night. Any suggestions?

How big is your tank?
What are you using for a source of heat?
What do you have for a lid?

My tank is a ten gallon working on getting a 55 as soon as possible and I use a uth. My lid is a mesh with plastic wrap covering. My substrate is 7 inches deep and I have 4 crabs.

Your UTH should be mounted on the back or side of the tank. How big is it? If it does not have a sticky side, you can insulate over top of it. If it does have a sticky side, you can insulate around it. Have you done this already? You can also put a blanket on top of the lid. If you are upgrading to a larger tank, you will need to get a larger heat mat. If you are sticking with your same tank, you might get a larger one or add another one. Some brands are better than others, and emit more heat. What is your humidity?

I have insulated around it. I am upgrading to a 55 gallon and getting an ultra therm for my new tank. Just trying to hold over until the new tank is ready. Would you recommend anything else?

I’m running a ten gallon tank as well, though I’m at about 4” of sub.

I’ve found that keeping my tank near the baseboard heater in my living room helps to hold temp even with my UTH in the wrong location. Currently under the tank, instead of the back or side where it should be.

I also have one my kids old ratty shirts as an insulating layer over the lid. Not the best, but it works for now.

I upgraded to a 60 gallon recently... May I make a suggestion for both your current issue and the new tank? I have found that having a heat pad that stretches the whole back of the tank to be EXTREMELY helpful - you can get many sizes on Bean Farm and Amazon. Also, I still place a UTH on one side of my tank that takes up most of the space (excluding the substrate area). Sometimes 2 will do the trick!! In a last ditch effort, you can try a heat lamp but don’t aim it directly at the top of the tank as this will create “hot spots.” Try aiming it an an angle or from one side of the tank. I hope this helped!! Image
