40 gallon breeder

Post by Theresa Howard » Tue Dec 08, 2020 9:08 am

How many carbs can you have in a 40 reg? According to the sizing chart, my 7 have plenty of space but I'm not sure how accurate that is. I have 1 small, 3 medium, and 3 large. Using the sizing chart they need 31 gallons of space. Is that right? or are they too crowded? I wanted to upgrade to a 75 gallon but I don't think that will work anymore.

I have a 40 gallon breeder tank with 5 medium crabs and they seem to have plenty of space...not sure if that helps, haha. I would just go with the chart... and if you’re not comfortable with it, go with your gut!

We primarily designed our size chart based around the 40 gallon, because it has always been a popular size. Back in the day, most crabbers were housing 7 to 8 moderate sized crabs in a 40 gallon without issues for years on end. It doesn't make for an absolutely permanent home, because they need so much substrate depth to safely molt when they get really big, but it is a great starter or in-between home!
