humidity

Post by crabs_lex » Sat Jan 02, 2021 10:31 am

hi guys
lately in my 55 gallon i have been having a hard time keeping the humidity up
i have an ultratherm on the back of it and always have it plugged in because it’s gets cold to easily and quickly when unplugged
i never have a problem with temperature though
i have a mesh screen lid and i had a piece of reflectix laying on the top to keep heat in (it covered the whole lid but i sometimes would fold it over to let some heat out )
but now i put wet paper towel on top and i noticed it’s not dropping as fast
like at night it starts out at 88% and when i wake up it’s around 70% (which i know it should really be 89% and up)
before i put the paper towels on the humidity would drop that much in less than 20 minutes
but i spray my tank multiple times a day and it doesn’t do too much
on my new 20 gallon this is not a problem because have a small heater on it (it came with it until i buy an ultratherm)
but my 55 gal heater covers the whole back and it’s never too hot to touch or anything
could it be too big
or is there something i’m doing wrong
if anyone could help i would appreciate it greatly

Your humidity doesn't have to be over 89%. Over 75% is good, most people aim for around 80% so there is some wiggle room.
How deep and what kind of sub do you have?
Have you calibrated your hygrometer to ensure it is accurate?
Where in your tank is your hygrometer located?

i have the recommended 5:1 ratio of playsand to eco earth and on one end it’s around six inches and the other is around nine inches
yes i have calibrated it
and it’s around halfway between the sub and the top of the tank and it’s over in the right side (i dont know if the side would matter)

I had glass cut to fit my mesh lid and taped it down with duct tape. Keeps heat in and keeps the humidity up.

do you think it would be worth it to find a glass lid to buy then?

I have glass tops for both tanks and love them! They keep my humidity in the 90's, and I never have to mist. I bought my 55 gal top online from That Pet Place. I've also been to their warehouse/store many times, it's awesome! The actual 55 gal top is out of stock at the moment. But they do have a 24x12" single top for sale ($18.99). If you have a center brace in your tank, you could just buy 2 of those (one for each side), and that should work too. Just measure your tank to make sure. Here's the link:

Your crabs don't mess with the plastic extender in the back? I'd worry my little heathens would lift it up and leave. I have that top for my aquarium and I just know the boys would get out of there. I was considering having glass cut to fit the entire top and glueing glass handles to make it liftable

For some of those tops, like my 20 gal top, the plastic is a little lose on the back. So for that, I taped down all the edges around the plastic part.
For the 55 gal tops, those pieces of plastic are so solid and stiff on there, I doubt there's anyway they could move them. It took me over an hour to get the plastic piece on each portion of the lid. I also had to use vaseline to help me slide them onto the glass. I ended up with more than a few cuts that night lol! I also keep heavy objects on the glass parts of the lid so they can't push them open.

Thanks, probably mine is just frigging old. I expect that glass topper is about 18 or so. I've had that tank since right after we moved here.

Could be brand differences too. I don't know why they're making the plastic so difficult to slide onto the glass now. I understand they want a good fit but sheesh! I've been fish keeping for years and it was never that bad. I looked like a cat scratched me all over that night lol.
