Feedback on my crabitat

Post by TeaDragon » Fri Jan 15, 2021 7:53 am

Hey there! So over the past few months I've been building a crabitat. I just really want my crabs to live a good life and I'm rather new to keeping hermit crabs properly (I wish petstores gave more information on how complex these guys really are!) so I just need some guidance.
Image
This is my tank. It is 40 gal and will house my four crabs. It's empty atm though. The substrate is 6 inch deep at its deepest and is a mix of coco fiber and play sand. I have a false bottom and an access pipe in case of flooding.
Image
My water dishes (salt water dish is empty atm) and shells are elevated. Is the net enough for them to access these or should I get a branch or something for it? Also, the white dots on the floor are chia seed sprouts :)

I have a spag moss pit in the corner, but I think I'm just gonna empty that out onto the substrate instead. The red rock is a lava rock

This is a little car hide. I figured that the hermit crabs would rather dig their own burrows, as they prefer to do so in their other tanks as opposed to using their hides. Should I add in some more?
I have springtails and isopods in this tank already to help recycle the decaying plant matter.
I haven't got a digital hygrometer or thermometer yet, but the goal is to get those tomorrow, so I'm unsure of humidity or temp yet. The tank is heated by a UTH stuck to the back with a piece of foam insulating it against the tank.
What do you guys think? Is there anything I should change? What should I add?

I would personally say yes to the question of more hides, but it really looks amazing! Love the natural vibe!

Yes, the net is sufficient. Hermit crabs are strong climbers. They do seem to like having cover so if you think you’d like to add a few more hiding places (which can be as simple as a few well placed branches, rocks, or plants) I say go for it.

Looking nice!

Thank you! I'll go and make some coconut hides for them :)

Good to know about the net. I'll see what I can do about the hides. I'm glad you like it :)
