Flood prevention

Post by Arkos » Sat Mar 06, 2021 12:33 pm

So I'm about to put my 50 gallon together. I was thinking, if I cut a piece of 3/4inch pvc pipe in half and stuck it In all the way to the bottom of the tank, with the top above the substrate and the inside of the pipe facing the glass, it could help as a sort of flood viewing window so I can be aware of that without having to push sticks into the dirt all the time. What are all of you guys thoughts?

Look up false bottoms. They were all the rage a few years ago. The purpose was to detect a flood. Turns out the false bottoms created their own set of problems (crabs getting trapped in them, for one).

I've been keep crabs since 2008/2010 and I've never had a flood. I don't mist my tanks daily or even weekly and I've never had a water bowl tip.

It’s not a bad idea, but keep in mind if you see standing water it’s already too late.
