Spilt water in substrate

Post by Hermielover121 » Thu Jul 15, 2021 7:05 pm

A couple minutes ago as I was doing my water changes for the pools and as I was taking out the freshwater I spilled about 3/4 of an inch of water from the container into the substrate. I ran to get something to absorb some of the water but when I got back most of it was already inside, I have two moulting and one digging around. I really hope this doesn’t cause any sort of bacterial bloom or harm my crabs underground. Is it ok to leave it? This is how big my pools are.Image

Poke your finger or something down into the bottom to see if water is actually pooling down there. If it is, you can roll up a paper towel and stick it down the hole to absorb extra water from down there. You may have to do this quite a few times to get to the point where you no longer have pooling water, but you really do not want a layer of actual water at the bottom of your tank. If there is no actual water under the substrate, then you should be okay.

Okay; could you see all the way down to the glass at the bottom? If so, and it's definitely dry down there, then you probably had enough substrate to absorb the amount of water you spilled. A small spill on occasion is probably unavoidable; just be as careful as you can (especially with the salt water, because salt will build up in the substrate over time and that isn't good), and best wishes!

Substrate dries out over time even if it starts out at the perfect consistency, so small spills like this are almost never an issue as it spreads out and gets absorbed quickly. I even dump water bottles into my tank on a regular basis to keep things moist enough over time. Too much at once and for sure you'll get standing water or super saturated substrate, but for the average tank it takes a lot of added water to get to that point!
