HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Hi! So someone interested in hermit care (not on the HCA) asked me why we used UTHs instead of halogens like they do for reptiles (they are big into reptile care). They mentioned halogens apparently penetrate the skin better instead of just heating the surface or smtg like that? And I have never even heard of halogens so I couldn’t really answer. I feel bad leaving their question hanging though. Does anyone know anything about this?

Halogen is a normal type of bulb( most stores sell), flood lights. If you use one, you want a par 38 as it has a wider spread. I use halogens and deep heat projectors and normal white basking bulbs. I have anoles, 2 bearded dragons and isopods(my master colony is even heated with a 50watt halogen)
The arcadia halogens I have stated the 50 watt could replace the 100 watt white basking bulbs used.
They also have the par 38 led, you don't want the led, they provide no heat.

It’s just easier to maintain humidity if you have a sealed lid, and those are hard to have with heat lamps. With UTHs you can just slap one or more on the side(s) and be done.

Can you use halogen or other heat bulbs with hermits? Yes, and to suggest otherwise is frustratingly close-minded, especially for those crabbers in colder climates who need extra heat. However they can also dry out the tank if you’re not careful so the hobby tends to look down on them.

Reptiles that require intense heating also don't normally have the ability to reach the heating bulbs. Crabs climbs! Makes it harder to judge how much heating is required, versus something like a beardie that stays a fixed distance away.

The other issue is that crabs generally require round the clock heating, while visible light bulbs like halogen can only be used during daylight hours. Ceramic heat emitters are a better choice.
