Question about maintaining humidity

Post by JNott » Sun May 04, 2025 12:10 pm

Hi I’m new to owning hermit crabs and have some questions. I live in Colorado and recently got two hermies as class pets for my students. Their set up is still basic but I’m planning on improving it over the summer. Right now they’re on a 20 gallon tank, with about 2/3 of the tank filled with sand. At the moment the lid is a mesh lid but I’m planning on changing that for a solid one. I have one deep dish for soaking that has a little ramp so that can get in and out and another slightly shallower dish that’s buried in the sand. The biggest issue I’m having is keeping their tank humid enough for them, I mist daily and have ordered a reptile humidifier to hopefully keep them comfortable until I can upgrade. Will that work as a short term solution? Any advice is appreciated!

I would suggest adding plastic wrap to the top over the mesh, it helped me a lot until I replaced it with plexiglass.

Have you calibrated your hygrometer to ensure it is accurate? Even new ones can be off. Is it digital or analogue? Digital are often more accurate.
Be careful with a fogger that you don't add so much water to the tank that you cause a flood.
I had my crabs in a ten gallon for 2 or 3 years, then in a 20 gallon for 2 or 3 more, then a 40 and now a 65 gallon tank. My tanks have always been 'basic', never anything elaborate or fancy.

I don’t have a hygrometer yet, it’s currently in the mail though, I was just worried about keeping them happy while it ships and was worried about the dry air here in Colorado making things worse for the crabbies. The one I have ordered is a digital one.
