Power Outage

Post by Jusblazm » Thu Jan 12, 2017 6:38 pm

We're under an Ice Storm Warning currently for the next 3 days. We're suppose to get anywhere from 1/4" to 1" of ice and it's not a matter of if but when the power goes out it will likely be 3-5 days before I get power back. What are some ideas in keeping my crabitat warmed up? Because with them needing so much humidity the tank is going to get even colder than it should. I figure I'm going to put some of my real heavy blankets ontop and around the tank to try and preserve some of the heat but any other ideas?

If you use bubblers, turn them off as they bring in room temperature air. If you have a gas water heater in your house, or a way to heat water that doesn't require electricity (like a wood stove or fireplace), heat some water and put it into a hot water bottle or some other container for liquid and place that inside the tank and replace it every five hours or so. Insulate the tank on all sides (blankets are fine) and limit how often you open it. If you have hand warmers or foot warmers (like hikers use) you can use those, too, but I would put them inside something that keeps the crabs away from the surface of the pads. If it gets really cold in the house and nothing is helping warm the tank, I would take out the above ground crabs and put them in something small with moss or a bit of sand and take them with you if you go to a hotel or if you manage to keep only one room warm.

Is your tank already insulated with Reflectix or cardboard and aluminum foil? You can only do this if you UTH can be insulated. For example, Zoomeds cannot be insulated. If it is a zoomed, insulate all around it. I've also heard of mylar emergency blankets at Walmart. Good luck! Stay warm!
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

When we lost power for several days after Hurricane Michael, I had reflectix all over the tank - every single glass was covered. I have also used body warmers attached to the outside of some tanks (they have adhesive backs) and then insulated around it. Good luck and stay safe!!

Your situation is not good (as I'm sure you are aware). All the insulation in the world will not create warmth, it can only slow the dissipation of heat. After 3-5 days without a source of heat, I'm afraid your tank is going to be kaput.

You need to figure out a source of heat, not just a way to preserve heat.

I would buy hand warmer packets--lots of them like a couple of cases and tape those to the outside of the tank. If you have hot water, you can use the water to fill bottles and put them inside the tank. You'll have to insulate the bottles if the crabs are active to keep them from getting burned.

Good luck! I hope it's not as bad as you anticipate.

If your hot water works you could run hot water into plastic water bottles and set them in various places in your 'tat.

Ok. This is going to sound weird but after our last incident I took the back up battery and surge protector from my computer and am now using for my tank. Figured it would keep the tank going at least for a little longer after power goes out. But, as said above, you're very limited as what you can do for extended periods of time. Sorry!!
