Just rescued some crabs and need help!

Post by SBLGO2014 » Sat Jan 10, 2015 4:26 pm

Hello,

I just rescued five crabs from a family who didn't want them anymore. When I went to get them they were in a ten gallon tank with dry substrate. We hurried to get them home but the moisture our van dipped to around 40. :( I also noticed in their bag-o-hermit crab stuff was commercial crab food.

My questions are:
- Since they've had such a dramatic dip in moisture, should I be putting them in a tank right away wit

-Can I start them on fresh foods right away?

I just want to rehome them with as little stress as possible. They are in their dry 5 gallon right now. I put them in the bathroom with the shower on so some steam and warmth can get to them until I know what to do.h 80+ moisture and 85 degrees? The tank they were in has never been heated.

-Should I bathe them now or wait?

Sorry. Meant to say they are only in a five gallon tank. :(

Thank you for rescuing the poor things! I would go ahead and try to add heat and moisture to their tank as soon as you can. They can only benefit from trying to stabilize their environment quickly. You can certainly start feeding them fresh foods now. They may not go for it initially but they will eventually start eating it even if you cant tell they're eating it. 5 crabs is a lot for a 5 gallon tank and overcrowding can lead to aggression, violence, and even cannibalism. I would try and get them in something larger. I think I read recently that one of the major chains is having a $1/gal sale right now (does anyone know which store and if its still going on?) so you could get a big tank for cheap. I'd probably try and go with a 29gal just because 5 crabs, even if they're small, will outgrow anything smaller than 20 gallon quickly. The 29 has the same footprint (I believe) but has add height for climbing. Also, you can bathe them if you want but it might stress them out more than anything. If you're introducing them to other crabs then yes bathe them but if its just the 5 they probably all smell the same since they've been together so there's no need. Have you checked out our caresheets? I'll link it for you. They've got a lot of great information in them.

Just dip them in some fresh water for a minute and let them walk around for a few seconds. But when you put them in the tank heat it and let the humidity slowly go up so they can adjust correctly. Also with the fresh food, you should probably still put in some of the commercial food but gradually add in fresh food so they can accumulate. Once they are comfortable with the fresh food you can completely stop the commercial food

Try to give them as much space as you can because of you don't it could stress them out so just check on them every few hours. And let them get comfortable with the new environment! I hope this helps!!! I'm wishing you luck!

Petco is the one having the dollar per gallon sale until January 24th but it's first come first serve. May want to call ahead.

Thank you so much! Phew! I ended up bathing them and putting in my 29 gallon with my three other crabs. I realized that the shower has chlorinated water, so I hope it wasn't damaging for them to breathe the steam for that hour or so. :( So far they seem to be loving their new tank! They're eating, drinking, climbing and exploring.

What's weird is the only aggression I'm seeing are between the crabs that were already living together. They seem to like to pick on a little guy in a too big painted shell. It's the only painted shell in the bunch and I'm really hoping he changes out of it ASAP! He was nosing around in the shell shop but I don't think he's comfortable enough to change shells.

The coolest part so far is the difference in my largest crabby that I owned before the rescued ones who seemed poky and mopey. With the new crabbies, I've never seen him so active! He really does need to molt though. He's getting the reddish eyes and is being a piggy at the food and water dishes.
