All but one of my crabs have a shell they can fully retract into. The one that is in a shell that is too small is in there by choice lol. He was in a shell that fit, when I got him, I offered him a ton of shells of all sizes to choose from. He swapped between a couple before settling on the one he's in now that is too small.
If it's the E, that's pretty normal. If they find a shell they like, they stick with it. I can count on my hand the number of times my e's have changed shells. They prefer the "D" type opening shells. They carry their abdomens under them instead of to the side Image
