Since you've come to the emergency forum, we know you want a fast answer to your question. In order for us to figure out the problem as quickly as possible, we ask that you answer the following questions as best you can. Some of them may seem odd, but they're all designed to give us the information we need to give you a good solution for your problem. The things in the [ brackets ] are there to make this post easier to read once submitted. Thanks!

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?
We have 6 inches of play sand and eco earth and coco fibers but its mostly sand.

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?
Ours is in the middle of the 55 gallon tank. Its already above 80 like 84 or 86
Our humidity is always about 75.

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?
3 under heater pads. And they are all on the back on our tank just about a half inch in the sand.

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?
Salt and fresh water pools with bubblers (which they all seem to love 💘 💕 ❤)

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?
I feel a wide variety and I replace every 24 hours I dont want rotting food we have everything thing from calcium to food packs with everything they like honey fresh apples peanut butter.

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?
I've had this hermie for about 3 months now. 💔

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?
Im really not sure what happened still now I'm waiting for my man to do some more digging because I'm really hurt by all this. We got hermies while going through IVF so these hermies mean a real lot to me after it failed.
He's freshly molted not really light pink ... but definitely 100% pink.

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?
55 gallon we have like a plexy glass my man works with glass so we had to make our own lid... when we found this tank 3 years ago we through the lid was infested and after buying everything for them the tank lid is out of our price range.

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?
We have 6 tiny to barely medium. All purple pinchers.

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?
Oh too many we have a shower corner thing filled to the top.

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?
Never we use treated water to clean things because I'm scared to figure anything else out.

12. How often do you clean the tank and how?
Every morning I do a spot clean. And check on the hermies from the night before.

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?
Nope we did for about a month and it doesnt seem to stay clean no matter what.

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?
Yes so plastic vines ... but thats irrelevant

15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail.
So I bought 2 new hermies not long ago... and its not surprising to not see new ones for a couple day.
When I did my morning check I found the new guys shell upward with a bunch of sand... so I cleaned it and there was no hermie if this was on the side with the shell shop I wouldn't have freaked out!
But I did these hermies mean litterally soooo much to me....
So I went digging thinking I'd find a dead hermie instead I find a freshly molted crab crawling to get away from me I thought REALLY fast and grabbed a tank we put a dieing one in over a month ago (he was new i got him because he wasn't doing well. No mites or anything just way to big for shell he was in I wasn't surprised when he passed)
So I took the sand right out of my tank really fast got him with a hermie food spoon cleaned with treated water.
And put the tank in the tank because we don't have a heater for it so we keep it in the 55 gallon tank. I also put 4 shells his size and liking in there...
So at first I wasn't too worried I thought it was the new guy... than when putting the sand back in its place I found my ghost pincher (his pincher has a top tip of the claw missing) that's ghost... but he has a black shell I found spikes shell.
So im still not 100 percent sure if spike took ghost shell and left... but I dont see him to know and we have so many black shells im not sure.
But anyways my main worry is what do I do to keep ghost happy as.possible???
He's really pink and I dont know what to do. I cant have him die hes been moving and eating the exo I put in there. He's in a shell too sorry forgot to add that... its been a really bad day to be honest.
Please help me. 😭😭😭

Hi,

Welcome To The Hermit Crab Association.

First, keep him in the ISO Tank until his molting process is complete. Make sure he has a hiding place so he's not stressed. Make sure the ISO tank temperature and humidity is stable. The fact that he's eating his exo Skelton is a good sign and also that he's in a shell.

He actually doing really well.
We found a hermie wearing his shell so someone stole it in his molting process for sure but the weird think is the empty shell wasn't near my molting hermie its really weird like spike got out of his shell and left it and found ghost shell and jumped in it. Im not sure. We went out and bought a tank and everything we found all the exo we could find and he's ate it all (it wasn't much)
But he's still pink but he's moving I think... I pray he'll make it though all this.

Hi Princesscjudd,

I'm happy to hear that Spike is doing well. As long as the ISO tank has at least six inches of substrate and hiding place, preferably covered by a decoration plant, he should get through this molting process.
