Mold on crab

Post by crabbycasey » Thu Mar 25, 2021 9:07 pm

I decided to fill this out to get my sister help with her crab ASAP...

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?
-5:1 playsand:coco fiber moistened, 6”

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?
-yes, digital hygrometer and therm...temp 75-77, humidity varies with misting, but 70-85%

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?
-uth on back and side

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?
-bottled water for fresh and instant ocean for salt

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?
-variety, foods we eat, but only all natural with no preservatives

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?
-PP, since Sept 2020

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?
-was in the process, had been down since end of Dec 2020

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?
-10 gallon with mesh lid wrapped in plastic wrap

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?
-2, a medium/large and a large

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?
-10

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?
-no

12. How often do you clean the tank and how?
-just spot clean when needed

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?
-no

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?
-yes, added the 2nd crab just a few weeks ago and he immediately went under...also added some light decor with the addition of new crab.

15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?
-stay pretty hands off

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail.
-Kermie has been under since late Dec. New crab, Harold, added 3 weeks ago and went straight under as well. We think it’s Kermie that created a window and my sister said she hasn’t noticed him move in a while. Well she just sent pic of him in his window and there is what looks like white mold growing on him. I’ve never read about this before. Any thoughts and/or suggestions for her? She’s very worried and sad...blaming herself for adding another crab. She thinks he’s dead. Image

Are you sure it's not the white abdomen?

Mold on crab

Not sure. I’ll text her your reply. She seemed pretty certain it was mold...

Edit: she said it’s definitely something growing on him

I asked her. Hard to tell from pic. Either way, it’s not good right?

If it's just uneaten shed exo, it's probably not terrible. If the crab hasn't molted, it's probably not good.

Yea. How long does it take them to eat their exoskeleton typically? Does it take long enough for it to start molding?

More/new info to share with hope to get some feedback still...

Photo comparison is top pic taken yesterday and bottom one Feb 21. Again, he’s been under since late Dec/early Jan. This would be his first molt with her...came from beach shop.

Mold? Reason to be concerned? What should she do...anything?

Would be super appreciative of any additional insight, thank you!!

I'm wondering if that was just mold on his exo like someone else mentioned. Because it looks almost gone now, so maybe he ate it?
All the tank conditions are good, so I don't think there's much she can do except wait it out. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

The top one is the most recent...where there’s more of the white stuff. I hope that’s all it is. We’ve realized there’s nothing we can do and are just staying hopeful and hoping someone might know what it is and offer insight. Thank you for replying!

Oops, I'm sorry! I had the pics backwards. I've def never seen anything like that before. Hopefully someone on here has come across this at some point. Good luck and fingers crossed!

My thoughts are that if the crab is dead and moldy, there is nothing to be gained by digging it up.
If it is exo getting moldy, or just the color of the exo (new or old), and the crab is alive - you could risk harming/ stressing/ causing damage to the live crab.

Thanks, Curly. We would never dig him up regardless...just looking for insight to thoughts of whether he is alive or not, more for peace of mind and/or closure. Thank you for replying!

I agree that you should (your sister) should stay the course. If it's moldy shed exo, it won't hurt him. If he's dead--there's nothing you can do about it and his decaying body won't hurt the other crabs.

If he's alive and you dig, you could kill him.

Why would his exo get moldy though? Shouldn’t he be eating it? Not familiar with how long that part takes...
