New here and new to crabs...sorta

Post by KDK241 » Sat Aug 20, 2016 6:53 am

Hi everyone,
I have been lurking and reading on here for awhile and thought it was about time to introduce myself and my new crabs. I had hermit crabs when I was a kid and unfortunately they never lived very long so I am new to properly keeping hermit crabs.

I purchased 5 crabs 3 weeks ago, 2 immediately dug and haven't came up yet, 1 surface molted and I thought was dead and the other 2 buried in the moss pit a couple weeks ago and haven't came out yet. I also rescued 7 crabs a few days ago from pretty bad conditions and am going to pick up another this afternoon (I'm a big softy and have the tanks, space and time).

The 7 rescues are doing great thankfully...all 7 went to their FW dish within seconds of putting them in their new tanks and drank it dry the poor things and ate an entire food dish of food (I make my own)

Anyways, sorry for rambling...I tend to do that sometimes :) Here are some pics of almost everyone!

Spike...who dug down 2 hours after getting him and hasn't been seen since

He put up a clear Do Not Disturb sign lol

Mango - surface molted but is doing great and comes out at 5am on the dot every morning lol
Image

Coconut - a large crab who was the biggest until the rescues came and disappeared into the moss for the past week but just came out as I'm typing this
Image

Strawberry - one of the rescue 7 and my favorite. I think he just finished a surface molt when I got him but will see if he darkens
Image

3 of the rescue 7 enjoying their food, they are 2 mediums and one xlarge
Image

2 more of the rescues - the 1 in the bird shell is a small who has been checking out all the shells but just won't change and the 1 in the back is a large and a total jerk
Image

Last of the rescue 7 - I think hes getting ready to molt, hes being a bit of a loner lately

There are 2 who I don't have pics of yet because they are buried.

I also have a dog, a rescued Chinese water dragon and a pygmy chameleon... gotta love my boyfriend for putting up with my zoo!

Consider yourself and your crabbie crew to be officially welcomed to HCA :D!

Wow! From zero crabs to 12 in three weeks...well, at least you're set for quite a while ! The crabs have a nice range of colors and sizes so it'll be easy (for a while) to tell them apart, especially with the distinct personality a few of them seem to have -- love Mango showing up at 5am every day. Keep us posted as to how Spike is doing (his "Do Not Disturb" sign couldn't be any more emphatic) and what type of shell little Ms BirdShell eventually chooses. Good luck with new clan!
PPs are Big Enzo, Charles Paris and Mr Pinch
On the Big Beach in the Sky: Murray, Gino, Oscar, Gordon, Ignatz, Harry and King Felix the Pale
Also Mom to Imogene the Syrian Hamster
