New Guy here!

Post by Alex R » Fri Aug 25, 2017 10:52 am

Hello!

I've been on this cite for about half a week now and I've even made a post in the Emergency section: though now, I think its just that I was a little paranoid and worried about my lil friends! Several days in with my 5 PPs, and I'm happy to say that I think my little guys have made themselves at home!

I have five Hermit Crabs: Hermes, Hippo, Horatio, Hermoine/Hunyadi and Harry. They, thus far, live in a 50 galloon 3 by 1 foot tank and happily munch on lettuce, egg and carrots-- though I plan to mix up their diets shortly! Personal recommendation: these guys LOVE pillow moss. I see them munch on it from time to time and in particular, they all like to perch on a choya log propped up against a corner with moss on top. Harry and Hermoine/Hunyadi, the latter being a behemoth compared to the other members of the tank, LOVE to climb! In the nearest corner, I placed a plastic leaf vine and I always find them climbing it; Its fun to see Hermoine/Hunyadi climbing, as he's HUGE atleast compared to some mates. He's probaly straddling the Medium and Large size range, while the others probaly straddle the small to medium. Thank goodness he's a gentle giant. I wasn't planning on getting one of the larger Hermit Crabs, but I saw him and he was crammed, and I mean crammed, into a small shell, smaller than some of the other Hermits half his size! He ofcourse, has changed shells since then. The reason I call Hermoine Hunyadi is for some reason I have an odd tendency to refer to Hermoine as a He, so Hunyadi is simply an alternative.

Harry is bold, but wary of his new mammalian owner. Harry was also the first of mine to change shells. He, along with Horatio, are generally the most active ones during the day and strangely a bit more lethargic at night, atleast compared to their compatriots. In addition they both are willing to be held, and will move about my hand with great vigor. Hermes and Horatio can be very hard to get right. . . They're the same size and have very similar shells, so I can only tell the difference by their personalities. Hermes, like his name, he's FAST. And by fast, I mean you look away and he's already on the other side of the tank when you bother to take a second glance. But he's also shy, and seems to be a bit more inactive than the others. Same goes for Hippo-- the darling of the group, and the smallest. Her favorite spot is nestled underneath the Choya log favored by them all.

So, I hope me and my new pals will find a nice place in this community! I'll post precise tank specs, but for now I'm all out of time :P

Welcome to the site. I wish I had the time/space to get back into this hobby. At my peak I had around 40 crabs in a 75 gallon terrarium with moss, vines, bubble pool, etc. I honestly miss it.
9 PPs in a 125 G Terrarium since August 2020: Sebastian (F) - 2 Molts, Midnight (F) - 2 Molts, Red (M) - 2 Molts, Jello (F) - 3 Molts, Ninja (M) - 1 Molt, Shelly (M) - 1 Molt, Tiny (?) - 3 Molts, & Dot (?) - 1 Molt

Okay so Tank Specs:

50 gallon 3 ft by 1 foot "Aquarium"(Ofcourse, its functioning as a terrarium at this point)

Note: Interesting story behind this tank. Neighbor gave it up and left it on the street, and considering a similarly sized tank would double my set up cost, I elected to take the tank in. It was bad when I got it! As dirty as heck, and some sort of precipitate had begun to form on the glass. Over the course of TWO MONTHS(Yes, it took a long time!) I cleaned the tank to perfection, cycling between Soap wash, Rinse, Vinegar clean, Rinse and I repeated this process until it was cleaned.

Purchased, glass aquarium hood.

Note: for some reason the lid did not come with the tank, so I had to buy my own. That cost me a bit too, because finding a 3 by 1 glass hood is apparently more difficult than it sounds. There was no such thing that I could find that was on Amazon Prime, so I ended up paying a premium for shipping. Yikes! To be fair, its a good hood; it makes using the lamp precarious so I only use it when I'm around. Any suggestions for that?

Zilla Premium Reflector Dome, coupled with a reasonably powerful 65w Incadescent Bulb

Note: The "clamps" that came with it were meant for a mesh top which ofcourse, doesn't work on glass. If anyone has a DIY clamp I'd REALLY appreciate it :D

Reptitherm UTH 50-60 Gallons

Note: I know that that ZooMed sells heating Pads specifically for Hermit Crabs, but really my research indicates that they were the same, and their Reptitherm counterparts got good reviews and were cheaper compared to their counterparts. Thoughts?

Substrate; "Natural play sand" from Home Depot with a smaller quantity of natural, sterilized beach sand

Note: As of now, I moisten it with a spray bottle filled with water conditioned with Top Fin. I plan to make the switch to Instant Ocean though, due to its cheaper price. Thoughts?

Water Sources; Two bowls, one from Petsmart and another regular ceramic dish.

Note: the Salt Water dish has a Natural Sea Sponge in it, and that I've been using Deerpark for their fresh water. I plan to make the switch to a store bought fresh water brand.

Zoomed Hygrometer + Thermometer

Zoomed Food Dish

And now for a list of miscellaneous decor!

3 Sun-Grown Choya Logs
Shells and Rocks from the beach(boiled for safety)
Plastic vines(I've been watching! I'm always scared they'll eat it :( )
Zoomed Pillow Moss(I think they love the stuff!)
Some sort of hollow tree(plastic) with fake leaves(From Petsmart)
Fake Cactus plant
DIY Clam/Bivalve hut
Tons of marine snail shells, for whenever they want to change! Also, pretty!

In Tank conditions;

Average of 75 degrees fehrenheit
Average of approximately 80-85% humidity

Thoughts on my overall set up? I would send a picture, but sadly I do all of this on my phone.

Also I have a new concern: tank smells stinky! I will say the Hermit Crabs have been pooping a suprising ammount. None of them dead, ofcourse. I heard that the moss can be kinda stinky and I thought it was the boiled egg-- until I removed it, and the smell remained. I'm curious; do your tanks have any oder?

40 CRABS?! Jeez man. That must have been wild! I mean, surely you could get 2 or 3 in a 10-20 gallon tank? Anyway. I hope you pick up the hobby soon, and out of curiousity what happend to all your lil buddies?

Yeah, it was wild. I had Strawberries, Ecuadorians, and Purple Pinchers in about 8-10 inches of play sand. I gave them all away to someone who lived a couple hours away using the adoption sub-forum on this site. I actually had a few that I had had for about five years.
