First time crab owner needing some help

Post by jillrabbit » Thu Mar 21, 2019 12:15 pm

Hey everyone. We received 4 crabs last night from someone. Our tank is at 80 degrees and the humidity is at 74%. All of the crabs have moved except for 1. Two of the four have dug down right away and not come back up. They were living in a tank with substrate lower than the width of a pea, so never had the chance to dig. One hasn't moved at all. It's in the shell tightly(not falling out). It doesn't smell. Is this normal? Also, I don't think any of them have eaten anything.

They probably have eaten at night when you don't see them, and burrowing in a new environment is usually their way of relieving stress. In fact, they might even be molting now that they're in a safe environment! As for the one who hasn't moved, wait a while and if he still doesn't move, check some forum pages. If you have any more questions, ask me or another crab owner! good luck!

(also, your tank temps and humidity are perfect!)

Welcome! As CrabMommaCharra stated, they dig to de-stress. Never dig them up. Only in rare cases of bacterial bloom or a flood. Is your substrate sandcastle cinsistancy? They eat such tiny amounts you probably won't notice. As long as your conditions are right, they should hooefully be fine. Read through the safe and unsafe food list and food pyramid. They need calcium and protein daily.

How are they doing now?
I have had pets in the past, but my family can’t have any furry or feathered ones due to allergies. I usually try my best to help and currently trying to set up a crabitat. I also try to treat others with Love!❤️
